This Giang paper-pulp horse sculpture is shaped by hand and draws inspiration from Vietnamese cultural traditions through an expressive palette of blue, red and gold. Its deliberately imperfect form and handmade decorative details give the work a distinctive character.
Traditional Material, Contemporary Expression
The sculpture is made from Giang paper pulp, a traditional material associated with the H’mông community in Hòa Bình. The pulp is combined with fine clay to create the form, followed by surface preparation, lacquer-ground treatment, painting and hand finishing.
Hand-Developed Ornament
The colour fields, borders and decorative details are developed by hand across the surface. Subtle irregularities in form and colour are intentionally retained as part of the maker’s hand.
One-of-a-Kind
Each sculpture is individually shaped and finished by hand. There is no second piece identical to this work. Small variations in form, colour, texture and surface are part of its one-of-a-kind character.
