Intimacy
"Intimacy" is a silent dialogue between two tigers—symbols of strength and pride, yet portrayed with an unexpected sense of warmth and tenderness.
In this work, Vietnamese artist Nguyen Van Trinh masterfully employs traditional dó paper and watercolor to create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and dreamlike. One tiger, rendered in deep shades of blue, exudes quiet strength, while the other, painted in gentle violet tones, introduces a sense of calm and vulnerability. Together they sit in a moment of stillness, their presence suggesting a bond beyond words.
Behind them, radiant fields of golden orange burst like sunlight, interwoven with luminous specks that evoke fragments of dreams. Trinh's expressive brushwork and spontaneous layers of color create an image that feels both instinctive and carefully composed, inviting the viewer into an unpredictable visual journey.
At the base of the composition, flowing black washes dissolve into the background, blurring the boundary between reality and imagination. Intimacy is more than a portrait of two tigers—it is a meditation on human connection, reflecting our shared desire to be understood, to share, and to listen.
Affectionately known in Vietnam's art community as "Trinh Lua" (Trinh of Silk), Nguyen Van Trinh continuously challenges the boundaries of traditional materials. In Intimacy, he transforms humble dó paper and watercolor into a powerful medium for exploring emotion, memory, and the unseen connections that bind us together.
